Sinds de Nintendo Direct voor de Switch 2 in april 2025 is het al een chaos. Er is veel misinformatie over hoe het werkt met de fysieke games op de Switch 2. Game Key Cards, Downloadcodes en meer blijven een groot punt van discussie en vaak met de onjuiste informatie. Dus vandaar even een handig lijstje van wat voor opties er zijn voor het kopen van fysieke game producten die op de Switch 2 werken.
Zoals je kunt zien heb ik ook een kopje English gemaakt. Dit omdat ik nog steeds vaak zie dat ook online de informatie die gedeeld wordt niet klopt. Om het makkelijk te maken één informatiebron te kunnen delen heb ik ook een Engelstalige versie gemaakt van dit artikel.
Switch 1 Cartridges
Praktisch alle Switch 1 games werken door middel van backwards compatibility op de Switch 2. Sommige hebben een gratis update nodig om goed te werken. Geen gekke dingen hiermee verder, maar voor de compleetheid van producten voor Switch 2 wel goed om te noemen.
Switch 2 Game Key Card
Het probleemkindje van de producten met de meeste misinformatie. De Game Key Card. Deze cartridges bevatten geen data en de game moet dus gedownload worden. Het is alleen wat anders dan een code-in box of een game uit de eShop spelen. De cartridge geeft je namelijk een download van de game die niet verbonden is aan een eShop-account. Dus regio’s als Indonesie kunnen ook gebruikmaken van Game Key Cards. Daarnaast kun je de cartridge ruilen, verkopen, 2de hands kopen zoals je wilt. Het enige is, je moet de cartridge in je Switch 2 hebben om te kunnen spelen. Het is dus niet eenmalig in je Switch 2 stoppen en niet meer nodig hebben. Ook zullen fysieke games het altijd duidelijk herkenbaar maken wanneer het een Game Key Card is.
Om even samen te vatten:
- Geen game op de cartridge, maar een download.
- De download is niet gelinkt aan een eShop dus werkt in regio’s zonder eShop.
- Je moet de cartridge in je Switch 2 stoppen om te kunnen spelen.
- Je kunt de cartridge uitruilen en verkopen, maar dan kun je dus niet verder spelen.
- Games die een Game Key Card hebben, hebben dat duidelijk gemarkeerd op de voorkant van de hoes en op de sticker van de cartridge. Je ziet een sleutelicoon hierop.
- Er is geen garantie dat ze altijd zullen blijven werken in verband met servers.
Switch 2 Edition
Switch 2 Edition van games zijn redelijk bijzonder. De cartridge hierbij bevat niet alleen het oorspronkelijke spel van de Switch 1, maar ook een upgradepack. Hierdoor kun je op de Switch 2 vanaf de cartridge gewoon de Switch 2-versie spelen. Je krijgt hier wel een kleine bonus. De cartridge werkt ook op de Switch 1. Hierop speel je natuurlijk wel gewoon de Switch 1-versie van het spel. Op de voorkant van de verpakking staat ook een tekstje met uitleg.
Code-In-Box
Dit is de minst voorkomende, maar wel een goede om te weten. Games als Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 komen wel uit met een doosje, maar zullen helemaal geen Game Cartridge hebben, ook geen Game Key Card. Zoals je in onderstaande afbeelding ziet heeft de boxart een vakje rechtsonderin waarop staat Download Code Only. Deze bevat dus een eenmalige downloadcode en kan niet meer doorverkocht worden. Ook is het goed om te weten dat je toegang moet hebben tot de eShop van de regio waarin je het koopt. Zo zal een Japanse code alleen in een Japanse eShop werken. Binnen de EU is er geen probleem. Zo kan een Duitse aankoop ingewisseld worden in de Nederlandse eShop.
Switch 2 Game Cartridge
Wanneer je niets bijzonders op de doos ziet van de game kun je er zeker van zijn dat je een normale Game Cart hebt. De game zit volledig op de cartridge en is in principe speelbaar vanaf de cartridge. Vooralsnog zijn alle Nintendo 1st Party-titels (niet kijkende naar Switch 2 Editions) op deze manier gedaan.
Mogelijk lijkt het dat dit niet het geval is door Pokopia en Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity – Definitive Edition. Dit zijn echter uitzonderingen doordat die games in Japan worden uitgegeven door respectievelijk The Pokémon Company en Koei Tecmo. Hiervoor wordt wereldwijd één lijn getrokken. Hierdoor worden ze in de rest van de wereld ook op die manier uitgegeven.

Ever since the Nintendo Direct for the Switch 2 in April 2025, something is still pretty unclear for a lot of people. This thanks to a lot of misinformation about how physical games work on the Switch 2. Game Key Cards, download codes, and more continue to be a major point of discussion, often accompanied by incorrect information. So, here is a handy overview of the different options available when buying physical game products that work on the Switch 2.
Switch 1 Cartridges
Almost all Switch 1 games work on the Switch 2 through backwards compatibility. Some require a free update to work properly. There is nothing particularly complicated about these, but for the sake of completeness when it comes to Switch 2 physical products, they are worth mentioning.
Switch 2 Game Key Card
The problem child among these products, and the one surrounded by the most misinformation: the Game Key Card. These cartridges do not contain any game data, meaning the game has to be downloaded. However, it works somewhat differently from a code-in-box release or playing a game from the eShop. The cartridge gives you access to a download of the game that is not tied to an eShop account. This means regions such as Indonesia can also make use of Game Key Cards.
You can also trade, sell, or buy the cartridge second-hand as you wish. The only catch is that you need to have the cartridge inserted into your Switch 2 in order to play. So, it is not a matter of inserting it into your Switch 2 once and then no longer needing it. Physical games will also always make it clearly recognizable when they are a Game Key Card.
To summarize:
- No game data is stored on the cartridge, the game is downloaded from a server.
- The download is not linked to an eShop, so it works in regions without an eShop (for example Indonesia).
- You need to insert the cartridge into your Switch 2 in order to play.
- You can trade or sell the cartridge, but you will no longer be able to play the game once you no longer have it.
- Games that use a Game Key Card are clearly marked as such on the front of the box and on the cartridge label. You will see a key icon on them.
- There is no guarantee that they will always continue to work, as they rely on servers.
Switch 2 Edition
Switch 2 Editions of games are somewhat unique. The cartridge contains not only the original Switch 1 game, but also an upgrade pack. This means you can simply play the Switch 2 version of the game directly from the cartridge on the Switch 2. There is also a small bonus: the cartridge works on the Switch 1 as well. Of course, you will simply play the Switch 1 version of the game on that system. The front of the packaging also includes a short explanation.
Code-In-Box
This is the least common option, but it is still good to know it exists. Games such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will be released with a physical box, but will not include a game cartridge at all, not even a Game Key Card. As you can see in the image below, the box art has a section in the bottom-right corner stating Download Code Only. This contains a one-time download code and therefore cannot be resold once it has been redeemed. The code is limited to the region you buy it in and has to be redeemed in that region’s eShop. So a Japanese code only works in the Japanese eShop. The eShop for the EU is linked so a code from Germany works in the Dutch eShop for example.
Switch 2 Game Cartridge
When you do not see anything unusual on the game’s packaging, you can be sure that you are getting a standard Game Cartridge. The game is fully stored on the cartridge and is, in principle, playable directly from the cartridge. For now, all Nintendo 1st-party titles (excluding Switch 2 Editions) have been released this way.
It may seem that this is not the case with Pokopia and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity – Definitive Edition. However, these are exceptions because these games are published in Japan by The Pokémon Company and Koei Tecmo, respectively. A single worldwide release format is used for these titles, which means they are released the same way in the rest of the world as well.
