In 2005 introduceerde Nintendo haar eigen onlineserver: Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Hun eerste game die gebruikte maakte van deze service was Mario Kart DS. Met de Wi-Fi Connection konden spelers online tegen elkaar spelen. Nu, bijna negen jaar later kondigt Nintendo Japan aan dat de service in mei van dit jaar stopt. Niet veel later kondigde Nintendo Australië hetzelfde aan. Het is nog niet duidelijk wanneer de Europeanen en Amerikanen te horen krijgen dat de service hier ook stopt. Nintendo laat hun oude Wi-Fi Connection vallen omdat er nu gebruik wordt gemaakt van het Nintendo Network.

Update: Voor Nederland zal de Wi-Fi connection op 20 mei dit jaar uit de lucht gaan.
